Netanyahu and the Recent Rocket Rain in Southern Israel

ASSOCIATED PRESS, JERUSALEM –  With rockets falling on southern Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday issued a tough warning to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, saying that those who attack his country are risking their lives.

Netanyahu delivered the threat in a policy speech to Israel’s parliament. He spoke shortly after his foreign minister urged Israel to go even further and topple the Islamic Hamas regime in Gaza.

The Israeli military has been battling rocket-firing Palestinian militant squads for several days. The fighting has killed at least 10 Palestinian militants and an Israeli civilian. It is the worst Israeli-Palestinian violence in months.

Christ at the Checkpoint 2012 Conference – Fighting For Justice at the Expense of Truth

There are many Zionist Christians who believe that Israel can do no wrong and that any who challenge the State for any reason by default already are. When the righteousness of the Israeli government’s political decision making is questioned they call it “anti-Semitic.” They think “Palestinian” is a synonym for “Terrorist.” They watch Glenn Beck more then they read the Bible. And they say “Hallelujah” when Netanyahu so much as burps.

While I’m being somewhat sarcastic, this is no hollow caricature. These people are as real as the liberal journalists and talk show hosts who hate them. Not knowing where their political conservatism ends and their Zionist Dispensationalism begins they say absurd things like

The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ. (John Hagee)

The Release of Gilad Schalit and the Uniqueness of Israel: Framing Anti-Zionist Sentiment in the Bright Light of Reality

by Dalton Lifsey

As a blood-bought, Bible-believing, Christ-adoring Christian, there are many things that Israel has done and continues to do on a political, social, government, territorial, and ethical plane that I strongly disagree with. And I soberly acknowledge that my disagreement will only become stronger as the “controversy of Zion” (Is. 34:8; Zech. 12:2-3) continues to escalate before the return of the Lord because of the extremes that Israel will be forced to respond to.

The extreme times will force Israel to use extreme measures to maintain their existence in the face of the extremity of the mounting onslaught. Some of this will be necessary and justifiable. And some of it will be morally disastrous. But with that said, every now and again Israel does something that should compel us to step back and behold the uniqueness of this people and their nation. Today is one of those days.

The Israeli government has agreed to release 1,000 imprisoned Palestinians (some 400 of them prisoners serving long sentences for some of the worst terrorist atrocities in the country’s history) in exchange for one young Israeli, Gilad Schalit (who was abducted on June 25, 2006). Read Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the Israeli Cabinet here. This is a significant day in the Middle East. And in it there is an important lesson to learn about the nature of this peculiar nation-state that bears the brunt of so much constant criticism and scorn.
