Why Calling Israel an “Apartheid State” Makes You Sound Lame

On this blog you’ll find many posts addressing the assertion that Israel is an “Apartheid State.” I have a lot of energy about this issue; particularly because of how completely absurd it is and yet how common it is to hear it spoken as axiomatic truth.

One of the reasons the “apartheid” analogy breaks down (and makes you sound like an unintelligent tabloid subscriber when you cite it) is because of the reality of violence against Israel. Some commentators call it “a threat.” But when pizza parlors are being bombed by suicidal jihadists, families are being knifed to death in their own homes, and over 7,000 rockets have been fired upon Israel since 2005, I don’t think the phrase “threat of violence” is suitable. It is a reality.

Another Reason Why I Don’t Believe the Propaganda About Israel Being an Apartheid State

Below are excerpts from a Friday sermon preached in Gaza last week by Dr. Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, the sort-of-kind-of Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority. It’s this kind of thing that puts the “Apartheid” rhetoric into perspective.

Of The Most Important Things You Do This Month, Looking at These Pictures Should be High on Your List

As the remaining survivors of the Nazi Holocaust die off one of the great difficulties the next generation will face is remembering that which none were alive to witness. There are many Zionist Christians who believe that Israel can do no wrong and that any who challenge the State for any reason by default already are. When the righteousness of the Israeli government’s political decision making is questioned they call it “anti-Semitic.” They think “Palestinian” is a synonym for “Terrorist.” They watch Glenn Beck more then they read the Bible. And they say “Hallelujah” when Netanyahu so much as burps.

While I’m being somewhat sarcastic, this is no hollow caricature. These people are as real as the liberal journalists and talk show hosts who hate them. Not knowing where their political conservatism ends and their Zionist Dispensationalism begins they say absurd things like

The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ. (John Hagee)

Throughout Church history the debate about Israel has always raged with regard to the Land and the people. Every few centuries another violent outburst of Christian anti-Judaism would stain a nation with Jewish blood. And every few centuries Christ-rejecting Jews would find more reasons to continue rejecting Him.

“GOD IS THROUGH WITH THE JEWS”

At the heart of that debate has always been the Church’s insistent rejection of Israel’s national identity and destiny. Our generation is no exception. The late Lorraine Boettner stated that:

“It may seem harsh to say that, ‘God is through with the Jews.’ But the fact of the matter is that He is through with them as a unified national group.”[1]
